A Gen Z travel influencer who has been to 190 of the world’s 193 countries says Egypt is among the most overrated countries on the planet.
Luca Pferdmenges, 22, made the bold claim in an interview with the Daily Mail on Saturday, with the statement set to dash the hopes of those who have long dreamed of seeing the pyramids and sailing down the Nile.
The German explorer has racked up 2.9 million TikTok followers and some serious air miles filming travel videos around the globe, but he’s not rushing back to the North African nation.
“Egypt is the most annoying place for tourists in my opinion,” he declared, without elaborating on why he thought that was the case.
However, the young globetrotter also took aim at some tropical hotspots, similarly saying they should be avoided.
“Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, most of the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean [are overrated]”, he declared. “They are often very touristy and often don’t have much besides beautiful beaches.”
When it comes to Europe, Pferdmenges told the publication that travelers can safely skip Belgium, as it is his least favorite country on the continent.
It just feels super unsafe at night in my opinion – and I’m talking about Brussels here,” the bold influencer explained. “And many of the Belgian cities are also quite ugly. Gray and depressing, especially in winter.”
However, Pferdmenges didn’t just engage in travel trash talk.
The explorer discovered some of the most underrated places to visit, including Montenegro.
“It is surprising how little recognition countries like Montenegro or Slovenia receive. They are some of the most beautiful places in the world and cheap, but no one visits them,” he said.
He added Uzbekistan, Myanmar, Bhutan and “most countries in Latin America” to his list of underrated gems.
“People usually forget they exist, but they are often much more exciting and affordable than the ‘classic tourist destinations’ especially hidden gems like Bhutan and Myanmar,” he said. “They are really unknown, but some of the most beautiful places in the world.”
When asked to list his absolute favorite place on Earth, Pferdmenges couldn’t pinpoint just one.
Mexico, Brazil, Israel, Spain, Bhutan, Great Britain, United Arab Emirates, Portugal and Austria were his top nine of the 190 nations he has seen.
