Doritos releases ‘Zero Gravity’ space-safe chips to go on SpaceX rocket

Doritos is living up to its “for the brave” label.

It’s a small step for the food type: PepsiCo is releasing a special package of “Zero Gravity” Doritos that are designed to be eaten in space, allowing astronauts to eat among the stars.

“The limitless possibilities of the space inspired us to push the boundaries of what’s possible,” Chris Bellinger, chief creative officer of PepsiCo Foods North America, said in a statement. “This mission is a testament to our commitment to delivering bold experiences and flavors, even in the most unexpected places.”

Called Cool Ranch Zero Gravity Doritos, this real-food Sputnik “replaces the classic powdery top of the chips with an oil-based coating” to keep powder from floating around the cabin.

Additionally, the chips are Mini – a mini-sized version of the regular chip – to mitigate the chances of pieces breaking off and contributing to space junk.food publication, Food and Wine Magazine reported.

This pair with their space-safe tin packaging and Zero Gravity Doritos seem like the perfect spot for intergalactic snacking.

Rocket chips will debut on SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft later this month.

This campaign will see private astronauts perform the first commercial spacewalk and reach an altitude above Earth that has not been reached by human spaceflight for more than 50 years.

These interstellar adventurers will also become the first humans to eat Doritos in space and will presumably determine whether or not the flavors are out of this world.

In honor of the launch, Doritos will also donate $500,000 to St. Judes Hospital for Children’s Cancer Research. Doritos/Instagram

Along with satisfying heavenly chip wishes, Doritos is donating $500,000 to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital to help fund childhood cancer research and treatment.

Fortunately, you don’t have to be aboard a spaceship to try this cosmic nosh.

Doritos is also releasing a Tokebound version that comes in a glow-in-the-dark can to evoke space travel.

Food hounds just donated $200 for a chance to win Zero Gravity Doritos.
