Americans who are dog-tired of high food prices and the high cost of living may want a beloved pet to come home to every day.
But that furry Fido can cost a fortune, USA Today reports.
Recent data from insurance company MetLife estimates the cost of dog ownership at $1,400 a year, but that doesn’t take into account the price of breeds in high demand.
Tibetan Mastiffs, for one, have previously sold for millions of dollars, but are usually purchased in the US for anywhere from $2,000 to $6,000.
According to the American Kennel Club, Tibetan Mastiffs are the ultimate “guard dog.” While they are loving inside the home, they can be “territorial” with strangers, who may find the breed intimidating due to their gigantic size and stature, weighing over 100 pounds.
Reader’s Digest reports that similar breeds in price include English and French bulldogs ($4,250), Chow Chows ($4,000) and Samoyeds ($3,750).
In New York alone, the average cost of a dog is estimated to be $2,305, and French or English bulldogs, Saint Bernards, Shar-Peis, Cocker Spaniels and Bernese Mountain Dogs top the list for requiring the most expensive care, according to MarketWatch.
But acquisition costs are just the beginning.
Dogs require care, vet visits, food, toys, treats and other equipment such as collars, leashes and beds and it all adds up, especially when inflation is factored in.
According to MarketWatch, spaying or neutering puppies can cost upwards of $700, while deworming and parasite control can reach $440. Not to mention, a microchip can cost up to $100 and if your pet is injured and requires imaging, surgery and medication, the price of pet ownership can increase.
And if you want to spoil your dog, like 60% of Americans, you’ll spend even more.
2022 data from MetLife showed that many pet parents would spend $50 or more on their pup for the holidays with new toys, food and clothes.
Last year, the French bulldog was the most coveted breed among Americans, reigning supreme over friendly Labradors. Past reports say their sudden rise in popularity can be attributed to their low maintenance and easy adaptation to their environment, such as moving to a big city.
However, they are more likely to suffer from health problems, partly due to their wrinkled nose, although this is not always the case.
