Forget everything you know about sandwiches.
A surprising new ranking puts subscience back on top with top picks in each of the fifty states, often far beyond what was expected.
The annual hoagie hoedown, put on by the user review website Yelp, once again delivers an unusual crop of customer favorites, besting many well-known ghosts across the country.
From Philly-style steaks in the Sunshine State to pastrami on rye in Arizona, the list paints a picture of an America on the move, where iconic regional styles are allowed to thrive elsewhere, sometimes multiple time zones away.
Then again, some states seemed to prefer to stick with what’s always worked, New York Yelpers, for example, had no problem dropping in on a local favorite that kept generations of Gothamites fed.
To compile the list, Yelp editors said they considered user rankings and the number of people voting, among other metrics, to discover the fifty coolest.
In the Empire State, the award went to Tony’s Beechhurst Deli, a family standout in the decadent and select Italian section of Whitestone, Queens, where fresh-made mozzarella earns raves. (“Deserves all the accolades it gets,” said user Najwa G.)
But New York had no way out in the Italian category in Montana, Tagliare’s Delicatessen in Missoula wins the hearts of locals with prosciutto sandwiches and fig jam on freshly baked bread, while in Illinois, Chicago’s Firenze Italian Street Food won. day for her spicy sopressata on freshly made schiacciata bread.
Meanwhile in New England, not a single lobster managed to beat the competition in Connecticut, for example, Yelpers relied on the roasted meats filling sandwiches at the Dilly Duck Shop in Norwalk.
And Mainers returned for the eclectic lineup at Cera in Portland, where Japanese karaage chicken and wood-grilled cobia salad make unique fillings.
Other surprises included Franky’s Deli Warehouse in Hialeah, Fla., where you can choose from a Philly cheesesteak or a Cubano, to name just two popular options, and Mike’s Alaskan Eatery in Homer, AK, where diners rave about the chicken sandwiches grilled and roasted turkey. (“Absolutely one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had,” said reviewer Thomas N.)
And finally, in Hawaii, Vietnamese sandwiches were a huge hit at No Name BBQ in Honolulu, in fact, the banh mi made a big splash on the nationwide list, taking top honors everywhere from New Mexico to Nebraska and even New Jersey.
“Best banh mi sandwiches I’ve ever had,” said happy eater Shaun H., chosen from Hawaii.
